Eating Healthy IS Affordable!

my #1 rejection or complaint I hear when talking about the challenge, how I lost my weight, and my lifestyle is: “Eating healthy is so expensive!”
my immediate reaction is BUT IT’S NOT!

My weekly grocery bill is usually no more than $50! I’m not kidding!

1) The key to eating healthy is doing your research and becoming that person who checks the weekly flyers!

Sometimes I open my mouth and my parents come out “CHECK THE FLYERS!”

2) The next key is to shop at your discount food stores! In Ontario we have a chain of food stores called Food Basics and that’s where I shop - exclusively! They have the better produce and are always drastically cheaper than the big markets.

GET A COSTCO CARD! Spinach: Lasts me two full weeks, and I have spinach at every meal: $4. Bananas: A bundle of 12: $3 Eggs: 24 $3 ... Not to mention Rice, oils, spices, etc.. The savings from Costco are out of this world!

Sure I could shop at the brand name stores like Superstore or Metro and get the points... With my bank card though I accumulate points no matter where I use it and therefor I’m not missing out on ANY points!!!

Recently this winter there was a produce problem and cauliflower was about $7 a head! The solution is easy - I’m 1) Not buying Cauliflower or 2) Checking the flyer to see where it’s the least expensive if I really wanted it!

Lots of stores price match, TAKE ADVANTAGE of that! You don’t need to go from store to store to store.
3) PLAN! FAIL TO PLAN - PLAN TO FAIL!  Take twenty minutes and check your flyers, see what’s on sale. Whatever is on sale is your best bang for your buck and plan weekly menu around all the amazing things you can do with that! Pinterest Is our favorite place to get recipes

Some of my best recipes that knock the socks off my guest are completely fix-friendly, healthy, Paleo, and even VEGAN! I’m not kidding when I say there is a healthy option for ANYTHING. Mac and cheese? Check! Pizza? Check! Spaghetti? Check! CHEESECAKE??? C H E C K! ! !

4) Buy only what you need!  When I first started this journey I would go to the store and buy a ton! Spaghetti squash, a full pack of tomatoes, Celery, or a couple heads of lettuce!

Buying things “just in case” added to my grocery bill and at the end of the week I was throwing away things because they went bad... I was literally throwing away money!!

This goes back #3 - PLAN! Buy only the amount of peppers and tomatoes and lettuce that will get you through the week ... If you run out - Go to the store! It’s simple, it’s easy, and running into the store for one or two items isn’t painful and only takes a minute.

5) lastly - utilize that freezer! You’d be surprised at what you can freeze! You can freeze spaghetti squash once cooked (I bet you didn’t know that!), Broccoli, Cauliflower, most fruit, Spinach & Kale (although it defrosts gooey, it’s still OK for shakes!).

Not to mention you can make freezer meals that will defrost for when you need them! Lots of the recipes we post on our
pinterest or on our blog are perfect to defrost later. We’ll make sure to let you know which ones!

With all this combined -  my weekly grocery bill this week was $20 Granted - Food Basic’s had their $.99 Sale ... But I checked the flyers, planned ahead, and bought only what I needed!
